Psalm 2 NKJV
The Messiah’s Triumph and Kingdom
2 Why do the [a]nations [b]rage,
And the people plot a [c]vain thing?
2 The kings of the earth set themselves,
And the rulers take counsel together,
Against the Lord and against His Anointed,[d] saying,
3 “Let us break Their bonds in pieces
And cast away Their cords from us.”
4 He who sits in the heavens shall laugh;
The Lord shall hold them in derision.
5 Then He shall speak to them in His wrath,
And distress them in His deep displeasure:
6 “Yet I have [e]set My King
[f]On My holy hill of Zion.”
7 “I will declare the [g]decree:
The Lord has said to Me,
‘You are My Son,
Today I have begotten You.
8 Ask of Me, and I will give You
The nations for Your inheritance,
And the ends of the earth for Your possession.
9 You shall [h]break them with a rod of iron;
You shall dash them to pieces like a potter’s vessel.’ ”
10 Now therefore, be wise, O kings;
Be instructed, you judges of the earth.
11 Serve the Lord with fear,
And rejoice with trembling.
12 [i]Kiss the Son, lest [j]He be angry,
And you perish in the way,
When His wrath is kindled but a little.
Blessed are all those who put their trust in Him.

Psalm 2 Commentary
The eternal battle of evil against godliness comes to the fore once again. Evil fights the institutions of the LORD. Evil fights “Dominion”.
We can think of man who was created in the image of the Creator God and mandated to rule in Genesis 1:28.
An attack on Adam was an attack on humanity. In this Psalm, an attack on His Anointed is an attack on them – them, God’s children. Strike the shepherd, scatter the sheep. Break their bonds in pieces.
But the Creator God has other plans!
The one enthroned in heaven laughs. He has a solution for this problem. The King, also called the Son, is installed as lord over all. The thought here is that the saint need not fear. Importantly, the saint must have the confidence that the Son wins the day, regardless.
The real battle is actually against the Son. Let the saint elevate his battles to the Son, who alone can defeat the enemy.
Cast all your burdens upon the LORD Jesus Christ. He cares for you. Don’t fight the enemy by yourself.
While this psalm is about the envisioned redemptive work of the Davidic kingship, the New Testament points to Calvary and quotes this psalm.
It’s only the Son (Jesus) who truly can scatter the enemy and restore the lost dominion. The saint can say yes to Jesus because of the restored right to rule righteously. For unrepentant sinners, everything and anything goes.
Therefore, this psalm proclaims the life-giving Son, and the available redemption when the hitherto sinner “kisses” the Son.
